The upper rear crosspiece is attached below the chair arms. Use clamps to hold the piece in place as you position it correctly, that is, with a 201⁄2” distance between the inside edges at the backs of the arms. That might leave up to a 1⁄4” overhang of the arms at the outside edge. There should be sufficient space to secure the arms and crosspiece with two carriage bolts at each end. Use a spring clamp to hold the parts in place while drilling the 1⁄4” holes for the bolts. When done, install the four bolts.
The cost of Adirondack chair kits will vary according to the type of kit, the size of the chair, and the materials used to construct the chair. Wood is the most common material used for chair construction, though composite materials are available as well to make the chair lower maintenance. Plastic chairs are also available, and these are usually lightweight and more resistant to weather damage. Higher-end wood can be used for chair construction; and these chairs will be visually appealing but much more expensive. Usually left outside, these chairs are subject to the elements, and with that comes rain, sun, heat, wind and any other crazy form of weather your geographic location can throw at them. In terms of heat, this is one of the biggest problems when it comes to plastic adirondack chairs.
Next use a gauge block and a miter saw or table saw so you can repeat the same length cut exactly for the lower rear crosspiece, the front crosspiece and the seat slats. Use the pattern that provides the curved shape of the lower rear crosspiece. (Abram’s frugal, Yankee blood became evident when he pointed out that by using slightly wider stock than necessary for this part, the waste piece makes the perfect matched curve needed for the rear seat slat.) After band sawing, sand the edges smooth and be sure to set the waste piece aside for later use.
After settling on a design, he hired a local Westport Carpenter named Harry Bunnell to make a set of the chairs. Impressed by the design, Bunnell saw the commercial potential and began selling the chairs to Westport’s other visitors. Unfortunately, he… forgot… to ask Thomas Lee’s permission to sell the chairs. Bunnell filed for a patent on the design, and received one in 1905, despite not actually designing the chair. Bunnell sold the “Westport chairs”, made of Hemlock, for the next 20 years. Typically he would paint them green or brown, and he sold them directly to buyers.
These units can be left outside year round, though Poly Lumber advises that in areas of significant heat (110’+) they are taken in or put in a shaded area. Winter weather is no match for these chairs! However, given that they fold up, you might as well take them inside.

If well cared for, plastic chairs can last for 10 years or more, and their lifespan can be increased if they’re covered during the harshest weather to prevent fading and wear and tear.
