I used SOS pads to clean mine first. The chalky residue came right off with hardly any scubbing. It roughed up the finish and the paint adhered well. They are beautiful and you do not have to wear the color on your tush. 🙂 .

These units require no care other than a good wash down with water every so often. Just spray them down with a hose and you should be good to go. If there are any stubborn marks, just clean with a brush and some mild detergent to remove the stain.
Using a scissor, carefully cut out your template pieces. Then grab adhesive spray.
Thanks for the info, Corey. I didn’t use primer either and I feel like I used quite a bit of paint. I tried to use a sweeping motion while spraying and I was worried about using too much, but since you mentioned using a thick coat, I guess I didn’t use too much (even though I used more than one can).

Next use a gauge block and a miter saw or table saw so you can repeat the same length cut exactly for the lower rear crosspiece, the front crosspiece and the seat slats. Use the pattern that provides the curved shape of the lower rear crosspiece. (Abram’s frugal, Yankee blood became evident when he pointed out that by using slightly wider stock than necessary for this part, the waste piece makes the perfect matched curve needed for the rear seat slat.) After band sawing, sand the edges smooth and be sure to set the waste piece aside for later use.
There are different ways to waterproof Adirondack and other outdoor benches and furniture. Everyone uses a method that is convenient for them.

If you begin the project by preparing the patterns and stock to the rough sizes the building will move along pretty quickly. We completed our chairs in less than a day while working at a steady, but moderately easy, pace.
Love this idea and my chairs look great–except there are chips in the paint after only one week. Did you have this problem? Any ideas of how to keep them from chipping again after I re-paint.
