When you pare away all the myths and misinformation, Abram is just a very likeable, easy-going, hard-working, down-to-earth woodworker in a reasonably well-equipped, but not extravagantly so, woodshop. He was very much at home there. And it’s not a TV studio set with woodworking equipment, but a real woodshop. How fancy? I’ve seen far more extravagant shops belonging to home woodworkers than this one.
The Adirondack chair itself was first conceived in 1903 by a man named Thomas Lee. He was working on outdoor chairs for his summer house in the Adirondacks, and built several prototypes for his family and friends, and called it the Westport plank chair.
Although projects similar to this one are rather common fare for most woodworking magazines, Popular Woodworking hasn’t offered one to readers for more than 10 years. The project has been discussed, of course, but for one reason or another, it never happened. Then one day the phone rings and a representative of “The New Yankee Workshop” asks if we’d like to work with Abram to build the most popular project ever shown on the show.

You are really going to enjoy using these this summer. We made templates of our Adirondack chair pattern pieces out of luan. Now when we make new ones, it’s easy to trace where to cut on the wood. Our first set, made years and years ago, finally rotted to the point that we had to throw them out, so making a new set is on our spring “to-do” list.
When locating the bolt holes, arrange them in a triangle as shown in the diagram below. Following the diagram carefully prevented me from placing a hole where a screw for the front crosspiece might be located.
You should be able to find the local stores number. That’s a tough call because these are popular. If you are going to make the trip, go before they open. I saw these in stock the other day at my Costco & they were going fast. I was there around 10:30am. Glad you were able to get your hands on 5 though!

But, I found that Gorilla Glue, as posted above, invariably has worked when Crazy Glue did not. Faster, less messy and less work than Epoxy.
The Highwood Hamilton line of Adirondack Chairs is comfortable, with a gracefully-sloping back and three reclining settings. The reclining settings don’t make a huge difference in the comfort of the chair, but they are better than having no reclining features!
Being in the Beach area of Toronto, Bear Chairs are not uncommon on front porches. Maybe it’s just me, but I find that certain areas of the city dictate landscaping and curb acceptability. What goes as acceptable in one area, may not be perceived as in good taste in another. So although “Bear Chairs” on porches in the Beach are the norm, I haven’t seen many in Leaside, North Toronto, or the West End. In our area, these chairs are quite common on verandas and porches.

I’m in the Bay Area, CA. I saw these at several of the Costco’s near me. It seems like some Costco’s don’t get certain products. I’ve seen other posts about products that I’ve NEVER seen at my Costco. It can be such a bummer sometimes. Please let me know if you do end up finding them. Good Luck
